This is cool

Austin Kleon makes these newspaper blackout poems. Very cool!

Critics of Evolution Step Up Their Game

Evolution critics are attempting to change school policy through legislation. They are promoting "academic freedom" bills that would encourage or require public school teachers to challenge evolution theory in their classrooms, the Wall Street Journal reports. Many of these critics are religious fanatics that believe in "creationism" or, as they like to call it, "intelligent design". This is the belief that man was created by God, as he is today. The advocates of intelligent design have been very militant about assuring that their theory is taught in public schools. My church, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, has been challenging these groups, most notably, when they sent an open letter to the Kansas School Board requesting that the Church of the FSM theory of creation be included with intelligent design as an alternative theory. FSM church argues that their theory is just as valid as an alternative theory as intelligent design is. I agree.

Currently, "academic freedom" bills are being considered in Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Michigan and Missouri. This is a serious threat to educational integrity in our schools. Where am I? And, how did I get in this handbasket?

The sanctity of marriage....

A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 17% of respondents either was or knew someone who married solely for access to their spouse's health benefits. And the GOP wants us to believe that same sex marriage somehow cheapens the sanctity of marriage.

Our backyard

The Gay Prince

I am so enamoured with this guy. He is so couragous, authentic and positive. I hope the world is kind to him. He has already suffered a lot from his home country and family. Shout out to you, your majesty!

The kids and I have been busy little beavers lately. We have infant playgroup (translate: mom playgroup) on Monday, a mixed playgroup on Tuesday and 3-5 year old playgroup on Friday. I have to say, Gabe and Jess didn't have it so good.

Love you all,

Alphabeat-- Coming to your homes from Denmark!

Hola Mi Familia!
I thought I would share my new obsession with all of you! There's this band that I'm getting really into recently. Their name is Alphabeat and they're kind of like the new B-52's with co-vocals from a guy and girl and their music just makes one want to get up and dance! haha!
Well! I thought I would just fill you in (since they are amazing, and everyone needs to know about them! haha)
Here are a few good songs by them if you're interested--

Taos

(Click on the images to see a larger version) Here are the kids outside of Taos Drum. The drums are all handmade by local Indian drum makers.

Then we did some shopping and browsing at the historic Taos Plaza (above). We had a great time. Jacques made out like a bandit with plenty of toys. A Peruvian wooden snake, a handmade drum, scary teeth set and an Indian bow and arrow set.

Santa Fe

We went down to see the Santa Fe(kers) yesterday. We drove all the way there to find that the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum was closed on Wednesdays. Ha! Just like me to properly prepare and find out these things before we leave. But, no worries. The plan is no plan and we ended up having a lot of fun just wandering around looking at galleries, shops and the Institute of American Indian and Arts. We saw an exhibition from the Choctaw Nation.

We also saw an exhibition (demonstration?) of the civilian casualties in Iraq commemorating the five year anniversary.

It's hard to see but it is a listing of the names of all the troops killed in Iraq much like the Vietnam War Memorial.

Today we plan to go to Taos. It should be fun.

New Haircut

This is what the haircut really looks like. Later this afternoon, it may be dyed brown.

Into New Mexico

Hey all,
It's Jessica, I guess I'll be the first to write a blog on here. I'm currently in New Mexico for Spring Break, and mom is just PRESSURING me to write on this thing!!!! (I kid :P) Anywhooo, We all watched a really good movie a few days ago, Into The Wild (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0758758/). It's about this college graduate that decides to get rid of all of his possessions and go backpacking all over the United States. The first person we all thought about was Greg. Greg, if you haven't seen it yet, YOU MUST!!! Well, actually, anyone who hasn't seen it should! It was really good, and the music was just as good! The whole soundtrack was by Eddie Vedder, the lead singer from Pearl Jam.
In other news, mom gave me a haircut last night!! I have to admit, it was kind of nerve-racking. Most of the time I looked like an alien with antennae!! But not worries, it turned out absolutely fab-u-lous! We wanted it to look like this.. http://beauty.about.com/library/graphics/Oval1.jpg but it kind of turned out like this...http://shopping.beloblog.com/archives/6008_0057.jpg !!! Which is just fine, seeing as that is quite chic as well.. I don't know why I'm telling you all about my hair styles, haha, I'm sure it isn't as exciting to all of you as it is to Mom and I.
Anywho, I guess thats all for now, folks.
Toodles,
Jessica

Beginning!

I have decided to set up this blog to facilitate family and friends in communicating the new fashioned way. So, I invite all of you to add your thoughts, pictures, links, etc. Feel free to change, edit or add to any aspect of the blog. I want it to be as much yours as it is mine. Plus, some of you may be inifinitely more creative and talented than I am.
